What is the best motorhome manufacturer?

Bürstner took the title of Best Manufacturer (New and Pre-owned) at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024, achieving a gold medal and an overall score of 81.4%, based on the voting from 5,013 motorhomers.

This accolade was secured after Bürstner’s performance on the new and pre-owned scene, which saw scores of 82.8% in the Best Manufacturer – Pre-Owned Motorhomes and 79.5% in the Best Manufacturer – New Motorhomes categories.

The best motorhome manufacturers:

Adria

Address: Drury Drive, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 1WH 01787 888980 www.adria.co.uk

One of Europe’s largest motorhome manufacturers and part of the Trigano Group, Adria produces everything from space-conscious campervans to top-of-the-range A-classes.

For the 2024 season, Adria’s Compact range will now only be available in Supreme spec, with added features bringing the range more in line with other models.

There have been a few new additions to its campervan lineup. This includes the Renault-based Adria Active Duo, which was our pick of the small campervans at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024.

Adria Active Duo
The Adria Active Duo

There is also a new MAN-based three-model Twin Max range – these are all two-berths that come with either a 140bhp or 177bhp 2.0-litre engine.

A new motorhome layout has been added to both the low-profile Mercedes-based Matrix and Coral ranges too, while the 780DL, a 7.8m long ‘van with fixed single beds in the rear and facing settees in the lounge, is a new addition to the Supersonic range.

The motorhome make also announced its budget brand, Sun Living, would no longer be available in the UK due to the limited quantity of chassis it was able to secure. Previously, Sun Living had been sold through Brownhills.

Adria has enjoyed great success at the Practical Motorhome Awards in recent times, winning five Awards in the past three years. The Adria Matrix Supreme 670 SL topped two categories at the 2022 Awards, while the Adria Supersonic 780DC was our pick for the best A-class motorhome last year, with its excellent spec and double floor impressing us.

Adria Supersonic 780DC

The motorhome brand has also done well in our campervan categories – as well as the aforementioned Active Duo, the Adria Twin Supreme 600SX picked up an award last year, thanks to its clever second lounge and comfortable sleeping arrangements.

This success has been replicated at the Owner Satisfaction Awards too. At the most recent 2024 Awards, there was a gold medal in the Best Manufacturer – Pre-Owned Motorhomes category, with a score of 80.7%, while silver medals were won in the Best Manufacturer (new and pre-owned) and Best Manufacturer – New Motorhomes, with scores of 78.2% and 76.2% respectively.

The Slovenian motorhome make had a dominating display at last year’s Owner Satisfaction Awards too, winning the best manufacturer – overall (new and pre-owned) category, with a score of 82.7%. Adria also topped the best manufacturer – new motorhomes category with 83.7%, while 80.9% secured another gold medal in the best manufacturer – pre-owned motorhomes category.

Auto-Sleepers

Address: Orchard Works, Willersey, nr Broadway, Worcestershire  01386 853338 www.auto-sleepers.com

Auto-Sleepers is a long-standing and well-regarded British brand that mainly focuses on van conversions but also makes Peugeot- and Mercedes-based low profiles. It’s a sister company to Marquis Leisure, now also owned by Trigano.

In 2021, the motorhome brand celebrated its 60th anniversary and celebrated with the release of a special edition low-profile, the Auto-Sleeper Broadway EL, a ‘van that came with what was described as “the best central washrooms that we have seen in a long time” when reviewed. This went on to win a category at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2022, as well as being shortlisted a further three times.

Auto-Sleepers Broadway EL
The Auto-Sleeper Broadway EL

The brand released the Mercedes Sprinter-based M-Star for the 2024 season, a model that, to quote our reviewer Sarah Wakely, ‘simply exudes class’. As a result, it’s not surprising that our judges picked it out as the most luxurious camper van on the market at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024.

At the 2023 Owner Satisfaction Awards, the brand secured a gold award in the best manufacturer: pre-owned motorhomes category, with a score of 81.1%. Silver awards were also won in the best manufacturer – new motorhomes and best manufacturer – overall (across now and old) categories, with scores of 74.4% and 78.7% respectively.

A similar performance saw Auto-Sleepers win three silver awards at the 2024 Owner Satisfaction Awards too.

Auto-Trail

Address: Trigano House, Genesis Way, Europarc, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire DN37 9TU 01472 571000 www.auto-trail.co.uk

Ultimately owned by Trigano, Auto-Trail is a popular British brand that produces van conversions, low profiles and overcabs under the Auto-Trail and Tribute names. Look out for the Auto-Trail umbrella included in many models! It currently offers six coachbuilt and four campervan ranges.

The motorhome make launched the Auto-Trail Refresh scheme in 2023 – it aims to take an old ‘van from the manufacturer and restore it to its original glory.

At the recent October NEC Show, the manufacturer launched its Ford-based Excel range, as well as adding the Expedition 670 Flex, a 5.99m-long campervan based on a Fiat Ducato and with a double drop-down bed over its transverse bed.

The brand has enjoyed some success at the Practical Motorhome Awards too – at the 2022 Awards, the Auto-Trail F68 and Auto-Trail Grande Frontier GF 88 won a category apiece, as well as being shortlisted four times between them.

At both the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024 and 2023, Auto-Trail achieved three silver medals.

Bailey

Address: South Liberty Lane, Bristol BS3 2SS 0117 966 5967 www.baileyofbristol.co.uk

One of Britain’s biggest makes of caravan, Bailey only started producing motorhomes in 2011, initially using Peugeot base vehicles – however, since the release of the Adamo range in 2020, it has been working with Ford.

There have been two new ranges launched for 2024 to join the coachbuilt Autograph and Adamo models. The first is the three-model Alora range, which includes three- and four-berth options based on a Ford chassis. The brand also launched its first ever campervan, the luxurious Endeavour, which is available as both a two- and four-berth.

Both the Alora and the Endeavour ranges made their debut at the October NEC Show, where the make also unveiled the Endeavour EV, a concept vehicle which was ‘designed with sustainability in mind’ in partnership with Ford Pro. The concept model, which is not currently destined for production, included fully electric appliances, while its work surfaces, upholstery and fixtures were made from low carbon recycled materials.

Following “significant growth” in its market share in the past year, the manufacturer has also added six more dealers to its UK network.

The British brand has built up a strong following over the years, as seen by its performance at the Owner Satisfaction Awards. At the 2024 Awards, Bailey achieved a gold award in the Best Manufacturer – Pre-Owned Motorhomes category, thanks to a score of 80.6%.

Silver awards were also secured in the Best Manufacturer – New Motorhomes and Best Manufacturer (New and Pre-owned) categories with scores of 69.8% and 74.7%.

The three medals followed the motorhome brand’s performance at the 2023 Owner Satisfaction Awards t00, where a gold award was won in the best manufacturer – pre-owned motorhomes category with a score of 82.6%, as well as silver awards in the best manufacturer – new motorhomes and best manufacturer – overall (across new and old) categories, with totals of 73.6% and 78.2% respectively.

Benimar

Address: Willersey, nr Broadway, Worcestershire  0800 026 7777 www.marquisleisure.com

This Spanish brand has been reintroduced to the UK exclusively by fellow Trigano subsidiary Marquis Leisure. It currently comprises three ranges – the Fiat-based Mileo and Primero ranges, and the Ford-based Tessoro.

The Benimar Tessoro 483 proved a popular ‘van with our judges at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023, not only winning the best motorhome for couples category, but also being shortlisted twice more. We really liked the high level of kit on offer, as well as the garage and the inclusion of a spacious end washroom.

The brand has won two medals at both the 2023 and 2024 Owner Satisfaction Awards, including a gold award in the Best Manufacturer – Pre-owned Motorhomes category thanks to a score of 80.1%.

Bürstner

Address: Weststrasse 33, D-77694, Kehl/Rhein, Germany 00 49 7851 850 www.buerstner.com

Now part of the Erwin Hymer Group, this is a longstanding German brand that produces the full range of van conversions, low-profiles, A-classes and overcabs.

The regard for Bürstner is seen by the motorhome manufacturer’s performance at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024, claiming the title of Best Manufacturer (New and Pre-owned) where a score of 81.4% was achieved.

This followed totals of 79.5% and 82.8% in the Best Manufacturer – New Motorhomes and Best Manufacturer – Pre-Owned Motorhomes categories respectively.

The 2023 performance was similarly impressive – Bürstner was our joint-winner of the best manufacturer – pre-owned motorhomes category, thanks to a highly commendable score of 85%, with a silver award achieved in the best manufacturer – new motorhome category, where the brand scored 79.7%.

Bürstner has historically performed well at the Practical Motorhome Awards too. Take the 2023 Awards – here Bürstner won two categories, with the Eliseo C644 taking the best 4 berth motorhome title, as we found ourselves impressed by the space it provided, as well as the garage included.

That’s not all though – the Bürstner Lyseo Gallery TD Harmony Line 689G took the best motorhome over £80,000 category; we loved how it created such a sense of home on the go. Both ‘vans were also shortlisted for a further category apiece too.

This followed on from the 2022 Awards, when the Bürstner Lyseo Gallery was our choice for the best motorhome for innovation, while the Elegance 910G was shortlisted four times.

Then, at the 2024 Awards, the Burstner Playa 530 Limited Edition was a shortlisted option too.

Upmarket Carthago is one of the few German motorhome brands that is still privately owned, producing well-built low-profiles and A-classes.

For 2024, the motorhome brand has been consolidating production at its new Slovenian factory, only launching one model, the 7m long Carthago C Tourer 145 LB RE. It’s available as both a low-profile and an A-class, as well as on both a Fiat Ducato or Mercedes Sprinter base, and was shortlisted three times at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024.

The rear panels of its C Tourer models have also been redesigned, now coming with curved corner pillars and a new light cluster.

The brand’s performance at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024 saw Carthago finish second in the Best Manufacturer – Pre-Owned Motorhomes category, narrowly finishing behind Hymer with a score of 84.2%. A silver award was also won in the Best Manufacturer – New Motorhomes category, with a score of 75.4%.

At last year’s event, the German make also achieved a notable score of 83.4% in the best manufacturer – new motorhomes category, which was enough to secure a gold award.

Carthago also found itself shortlisted three times at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023 – two of these entries were through the Carthago Liner for Two I53, with our judging panel loving how you could almost forget you’re in a motorhome after pitching up. The 2022 Awards resulted in the Carthago Chic C-Line I 4.9 Le L Superior being our pick of the A-class models too, with our judges impressed by the high standard of fixtures and fittings.

Chausson is among the motorhome manufacturers that are part of the Trigano Group. One of the best-selling continental motorhome brands in the UK, Chausson has a range of highly innovative low-profiles.

For the new season, Chausson added the X650, a Fiat-based model which is 40cm longer than the X550. One of its standout features is its dressing room, which can be raised to make room for a garage that can store two bikes. It’s a model that impressed our judges enough to take the best low-profile motorhome category at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024 and was shortlisted twice more.

The Etape range was also launched – these two special editions are based on the 140bhp Peugeot Boxer.

Other models that have particularly stood out to us are the Chausson S514 and the revamped version, the Chausson S514 Sport Line, which improved what was already a successful vehicle. Both had successful Practical Motorhome Awards appearances, winning a category apiece at the 2022 and 2023 Awards respectively.

Coachman

A relative newcomer to the world of motorhomes, Coachman only made caravans up until 2022, when the brand was taken over by Swedish motorhome brand Kabe and moved into the ‘van sphere.

Since then, it has released two ranges. The first was the Travel Master, which is made up of two models – the Coachman Travel Master 565 and the 545, both of which were shortlisted at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023.

The second is the Travel Master Imperial, the motorhome manufacturer’s first A-class ‘van which launched at the October NEC Show through the 845. The single-floorplan four-berth comes to 8.22m and offers a very high spec level.

It’s a make that has done well at the Owner Satisfaction Awards in recent years, particularly on the used motorhome front. A gold award went to the brand at the 2024 Owner Satisfaction Awards, with a score of 83.8% securing third place in the Best Manufacturer – Pre-Owned Motorhomes category. 73.5% saw a silver award won in the Best Manufacturer – New Motorhomes category too.

Dethleffs brought its first van conversions to the recent October NEC Show, with the Globetrail models, available on either Fiat Ducato or Citroen Relay. In fact, the brand has been shortlisted nine times since the 2022 Awards, as well as winning a further category.

Elddis

Address: Delves Lane, Consett, County Durham DH8 7PE 0371 964 2113 www.elddis.co.uk

Erwin Hymer bought Elddis, one of the UK’s biggest brands, a few years ago – about the same time that Elddis itself had resurrected the Compass brand in motorhomes. Since then it has moved into highly innovative van conversions too.

While Erwin Hymer has decided to drop Compass for the 2024 season, the brand has refreshed the interiors of Elddis models, as well as giving the exterior a refresh with new decals. However, there are plans to expand the Xplore motorhome range, with the model that was on show for external viewing at the October NEC Show hoped to be the first of a line which is targeted at younger buyers.

Elddis currently offers three motorhome ranges – Accordo, Autoquest and Encore – as well as the Autoquest CV camper van range.

There was a successful showing for the brand at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023, with the Elddis Autoquest 115 winning a category and being shortlisted once more, a feat repeated by the Elddis Autoquest 150 at the 2022 Awards.

One such ‘van is the Platin I 8400 Plus, a ‘van which we rated highly when we saw it and a model that was a winner at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2022. We thought it offered a truly luxurious – and self-sufficient – touring experience.

At the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023, the Frankia MI 7 BD Neo was shortlisted, with our judges liking how it managed to provide the same quality in a ‘van that was a more manageable length.

There has been great success for the brand at the Owner Satisfaction Awards too, with Hymer topping both the Best Manufacturer – Pre-Owned Motorhomes and Best Manufacturer – New Motorhomes categories at the 2024 Awards, thanks to scores of 84.8% and 80.3% respectively.

This followed the gold medals won in both the best manufacturer: pre-owned motorhomes and the best manufacturer: new motorhomes categories last year, where Hymer scored 84.4% and 82.1% respectively.

The Hymer Venture S proved popular with our judges at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023 too, where it was not only our pick for the most innovative motorhome but also found itself shortlisted twice more.

Amongst other changes, the manufacturer has also made its Van TI Plus ‘vans 10cm thicker and 10kg lighter, while Van Wave models have had their weight reduced by switching to a diesel heater. A closer working relationship with Volkswagen can be seen by the Van Ti 640 MEG VANSATION now being available on a VW Crafter too.

The Knaus Tourer Van 700MQ Vansation had a successful Practical Motorhome Awards 2023, winning the best motorhome under £80,000 category, while the motorhome make had two more vans shortlisted. This followed on from the three ‘vans that were shortlisted at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2022.

Like Spanish brand Benimar, Italian manufacturer Mobilvetta has been reintroduced into the UK exclusively by fellow Trigano subsidiary Marquis Leisure. Its K Yacht Tekno Line range of A-classes has a distinctly nautical feel.

One such example is the Mobilvetta K Yacht Tekno Line 95 – when we reviewed the model in 2022, we thought it was a stylish and quality ‘van, with a very comfortable lounge.

Pilote

Address: Route du Demi Boeuf, 4310 La Limouziniere, France 00 33 02 40 32 16 00 www.pilote-motorhome.uk

French brand Pilote produces A-classes, low-profiles and van conversions with a wide range of spec levels.

Pilote has said it intends to move away from “seasonal” range overhauls each year, and instead wants to start making technical changes to chosen ranges at the beginning and middle of the year.

As the 2024 season came around, Pilote added a new layout to its low-profile Ford Transit-based Atlas range. The Pilote Atlas A656D, which comes with a rear dressing room and a layout akin to the P626D, proved popular at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024 too, making the shortlist three times.

There have also been changes to its campervan models. Take the Pilote Vega V600G X Edition, which now comes with a bed with a 147cm width, despite the ‘van being only 5.99m in length. This was the recipient of the best 2 berth motorhome category at our recent awards, with other impressive features including its kit level and kitchen storage.

This followed the appearance of another campervan at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023, where the Pilote V633M made the shortlist twice.

Rapido

Address: 414 rue des Perrouins, CS 20019 53101 Mayenne, France 00 33 02 43 30 10 70 www.rapido-motorhome.co.uk

Rapido produces a full range of motorhomes under its own name, as well as more budget priced Itineo A-classes and low-profiles, and highly innovative camper vans which are branded as Dreamer in the UK.

In 2022, the brand marked its 60th anniversary by bringing out six models that came with an inbuilt vacuum cleaner.

The brand’s 2024 line-up saw a new take on the transverse bed arrangement. With the manufacturer believing that the 5.99m length other motorhome brands offer for the transverse bed layout can feel cramped, the decision was taken to introduce the Rapido C03 to the low-profile C series, which comes to a length of 6.19m.

This extra 20cm means a conventional wardrobe and a large fridge are included, while steps lead up to the bed, replacing a ladder. The new model impressed us enough to take the motorhome for couples category at the 2024 Practical Motorhome Awards.

Rapido C03
The Rapido C03

The C55i and C86i are also arriving on forecourts, after mainly appearing only at shows last year.

Rapido also makes changes to only a single range each season, and for 2024, it’s been the 6F range. This now runs on a Peugeot, with Fiat an option, while the low-profile ‘vans now have a hood from the C series, as well as a heated Skyview panoramic roof. A new model to the range, the Rapido 606F, proved particularly popular with our judges at the Awards, winning the best motorhome under 7m category – it’s technically a 2+2 berth ‘van, one which we think offers luxury and space to couples.

The manufacturer has also brought the V65 XL back, following a year’s absence.

For 2024, Itineo has added a six-berth low-profile ‘van to its line-up, the Itineo Cozi PS700, while Dreamer has brought out two special additions.

Distributed in the UK by fellow Trigano Group subsidiary Auto-Trail, Roller-Team is an Italian motorhome manufacturer with a strong focus on family vans. It is also the only A-class producer to include UK-oriented cab doors. The brand recently announced it was introducing its Livingstone range of campervans to the UK market.

Two gold awards were awarded to Roller Team at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023, as Roller-Team scored 80.9% in the best manufacturer – new motorhomes category and 81.8% in the best manufacturer – pre-owned motorhomes category.

Then, at the 2024 Awards, the motorhome manufacturer won two silver awards.

Swift

Address: Dunswell Road, Cottingham, East Yorkshire HU16 4JX 01482 875740 www.swiftgroup.co.uk

Britain’s largest leisure vehicle manufacturer has been producing motorhomes since 1985. Perhaps best known for its family-oriented Kon-tiki range, the British motorhome brand announced it was releasing its first campervan in 2021, the Swift Monza.

Swift extended its Ford Transit-based Voyager range that launched last season too, adding a sub-range of overcab models across three different layouts. The Voyager 4 models made their debut at The Great Holiday Home Show and had a successful debut at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024.

Here, the island bed Swift Voyager 494 took the title of the best four-berth motorhome, with its spacious washroom and side kitchen standing out.

The five-berth Swift Voyager 475 was our pick of the family motorhomes too – we think its layout is ideal for giving everyone the space for spreading out.

The original Voyager range had also proved popular with us, as seen by the Swift Voyager 584, a winner of the best low-profile motorhome at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023, with a huge garage and a comfortable lounge just two of the factors that helped it secure the category.

Another new model from the manufacturer is the Ascari 384, a three-berth Fiat Ducato-based ‘van which debuted at the October NEC show.

At the 2024 Owner Satisfaction Awards, Swift achieved three silver medals. The British brand had a successful Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023 too – a gold award was won in the best manufacturer – pre-owned motorhomes category with a score of 80.1%, while two silver awards were awarded too.

Weinsberg

Address: Helmut-Knaus-Strasse 1, D-94118, Jandelsbrunn, Germany www.weinsberg.com

The budget brand from Knaus, the first Weinsberg model hit the road in 1969, but nowadays, the manufacturer offers both motorhomes and campervans.

Like Knaus, Weinsberg has launched a pop-up roof version of its X-Cursion, through the X-Cursion CUV 500 LT. Based on a VW T6.1, its roof rises on all sides to provide an internal headroom of 70cm by 2.17m.

This follows on from the six models that have been added to the CaraSuite and CaraLoft ranges.

The brand was a winner at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023 too, thanks to the Weinsberg X-Cursion Van 500 LT, which was also shortlisted a further three times. We really appreciated touches like the cosy lounge and the wardrobe that can be accessed externally.

Where can I see the best motorhome brands?

There are UK shows you can visit where you can see a wide variety of motorhomes from many of the manufacturers covered here, and all in one place. The two biggest happen at Birmingham’s NEC, with the larger show in October when the season’s new models are launched, and a smaller one earlier in the year. This will be occurring between 13th-18th February in 2024.

A show runs at Glasgow’s SECC too, normally taking place around the same time for those north of the border – in 2024, it will be held between 1st-4th February. There is also a smaller show at EventCity in Manchester in January, which will be running from 11th-14th.
