If your image of a Pilote Galaxy A-class is a vehicle with a flat front-end running at the same angle all the way from the grille across the windscreen and up to the roof, prepare to be surprised – as we were when we saw the new Galaxy G740FGJ at Pilote’s 2027 season launch.

Why? Well, for 2027 the French company has completely changed the exterior look of all its Galaxy A-class motorhomes. Working with an external design agency, Pilote has gone for a much more angular look; something it says will make people proud of owning an A-class and which it considers so modern that it won’t look dated five years down the road.

You might venture to say that with a more prominent bonnet it looks a bit like a… low-profile. But we think it resembles A-classes from Pilote’s sister brand Frankia (which, given Frankia’s higher price tag, could explain the bit about making customers proud). In production models, the Pilote logo (now in a different font) will be sited immediately above the grille, rather than the windscreen, as you see it in the picture above.


To be fair, the changes have been partly motivated by Pilote’s need to abide by new European GSR2 regulations which require the company to introduce new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features in the motorhome. That is also why all of the company’s Galaxy models now come with a reversing camera as standard. You could also add the best motorhome sat nav, to help you enjoy a stress-free experience on the road.

There are changes on the side of the motorhome, too. This season, all Galaxy models come with a compressor fridge that’s at least 150 litres in volume (158 litres on this model). Given that the Truma heating system runs on diesel, Pilote says you only need a 2.75kg gas bottle to run the hob.

That means the compartment on the offside front which used to hold larger gas bottles has now been converted to a ‘Technibox’, giving you access to the fuse box and the battery. (Pilote claims you need a 200Ah lithium battery to run such a fridge.)

Inside there have been changes, too. The two-tone settees have been redesigned to get what Pilote considers a more domestic look. While the test model we saw was an Expression model, more than 80% of orders for this model in Britain are now Evidence, with a fixed list of extras and the colour scheme you get in Bavaria motorhomes. This features darker wood-effect worktops compared with the white you see here.

You still get a pleasant and airy front lounge with parallel settees that convert into travel seats without the need for infills.

The kitchen is now one-piece, but with a larger splashback that goes right around the large window. There’s still an OK workspace, too, in front of the two-burner hob with a square sink right up against the wall beneath two spice racks.

It’s nicely lit, and you get USB and USB-C ports here. That larger motorhome fridge behind you includes a significant freezer compartment.

However, there is no oven or microwave, even as an option, so the best air fryer for a motorhome or a similar cooking appliance could be worth packing.

There’s a step up to the transverse washroom, which is slightly narrower than some we have seen, but with rooflights over both the good-size shower cubicle, and the main washroom, which features a round salad bowl-style basin.

Because of this layout the toilet cassette access on the outside is only separated from the habitation door by the fridge, so it would likely come into an awning (see: how to empty a motorhome cassette toilet).

Two large single beds take up the rear bedroom with a large Heki to bring daylight in, as well as LED lighting, spotlights and speakers under the lockers.

Storage in the Galaxy G740FGJ Expression

As a motorhome with a garage, you get a large garage at the back, with brackets for bikes and an external shower.

There’s also a skirting locker outside, and a boot locker as soon as you come in through the habitation door.

Two large overhead lockers split in two (with shelves on the nearside) cover the lounge and kitchen, and a third covers the lounge on the offside. There are three more overhead lockers at the back of the bedroom, and two large hanging wardrobes at the foot of each bed. So quite adequate for clothes storage.

The kitchen base unit has four drawers. One of them contains a cutlery tray and another a bin, but we might be inclined to take that out, because otherwise there isn’t a huge amount of space for pots and pans in a safe lower position. There is a small drawer under the fridge and a larger locker above it.

The washroom has one cupboard under the basin and a small cubbyhole for toilet rolls. There’s another cubbyhole in the shower for toiletries.

Alternatives to consider

If you would be happy with a low-profile ‘van and want fixed single beds, you could take a look at the Swift Trekker 584. The motorhome has a good level of kit and provides a comfortable travelling base.

You could also think about the Bürstner Signature SFT7.5, an innovative four-berth motorhome which comes on a Fiat Ducato base vehicle, has plenty of customisation, and also offers an impressive kitchen.
