iPhone owners planning a trip to Scotland in the near future might want to check out the new Welcome to Scotland app.

Available from the iTunes App Store for £2.99, the app is essentially a mobile version of the Welcome to Scotland website that’s operated by tourism industry veteran Visitor Centres Ltd.

Although the Welcome to Scotland app uses GPS data to pinpoint nearby tourist attractions, its content is preloaded and so an internet connection required to access its 16,000 points of interest — handy if you’re in one of the countries more remote regions.

The app also includes discounts and special offers for everything from restaurants and accommodation, plus listings for over 9,500 places to stay — including campsites and caravan parks.

‘Augmented reality’ is also used to transform an iPhone into a virtual tour guide by overlaying pertinent information over images viewed live using the digital camera. That means identifying immediate places of interest is as easy as pointing the camera at them.
