The Stay the Night scheme has returned to Scotland for 2024, with overnight stays permitted at a selection of car parks managed by Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS).

The scheme, which is running up until 31st October, is open to self-contained motorhomes and campervans (meaning the facilities, such as the toilet, need to be within the vehicle), and allows them to spend an overnight stay at the participating car parks for one night, between 6pm and 10am. Visitors are then not permitted to return for the next 48 hours.

Stay the Night has returned at a time when visitors will be planning their tours and looking for the best motorhome sites in Scotland to explore the delights of the country.

The FLS has said some additional car parks will be added to the list in the near future for the summer season, and is advising motorhomers to check the FLS web page to see the most up-to-date list.

The scheme, which operates on a first come first served basis, cannot be booked in advance. Most of the participating car parks will charge £7, which can be paid via the RingGo app or by calling them on 0131 239 0000. Bridge of Orchy, where chemical waste disposal facilities can be found, is charging £10 for an overnight stay, or £5 to drop off chemical waste. Two additional car parks offering chemical waste disposal will be added soon too.

The Stay the Night website also advises that “at sites with poor signal you’ll have up to 72 hours after your visit to pay”.

A full list of the participating car parks can be found by visiting Forestry and Land Scotland’s Stay the Night page.

Are you thinking of touring in Europe instead? Then make sure you’re aware of the “common insurance misunderstanding” that could cost motorhome owners over £10,000 when driving in Europe.
