A fantastic resource for finding a wheelchair-friendly campsite
It’s not always easy to use campsite-listing websites, particularly if you’re looking for specific features – for example, finding a site with good facilities for disabled people can be quite tricky. The design of many listings websites is complicated, making it difficult to navigate them and locate the exact information that you need.
Which is exactly what makes the simple and accessible Caravanable website so good. It was created by caravanner Angie Gardiner; she and husband Tim have a son who uses a wheelchair. They became frustrated by the apparent lack of information on campsite facilities for disabled people, so decided to create their own website; Caravanable is the result.
Caravanable features lists of parks and campsites that have “the minimum requirements for disabled people of a shower, basin and loo with ramped access”; they’re handily divided by country (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) and county, so it’s really easy to find somewhere in the area where you’re planning a tour. There are relevant notes alongside each entry, as well as contact details for the site. The sites listed haven’t been inspected by Angie, but they have been recommended by other campers.
There’s more to Caravanable, too: it also lists beaches that offer access for those who are disabled, and provides details of where beach-wheelchairs are available.
If you or one of your touring companions are disabled, do take a look at Caravanable before planning your next tour: you’ll find it at www.caravanable.co.uk. You can also provide your own feedback to help make the site even more comprehensive.
