Upgrades to your motorhome can take your touring experience from good to great. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a full-time adventurer, these improvements will make your life on the road more comfortable, convenient and enjoyable.
However, while having the best motorhome accessory and other similarly useful touring gadgets can make a real difference to our adventures, it’s all too easy to become a magpie and spend money on those motorhome upgrades that might not be all they seem.
Here, I’m unpacking the top upgrades worth considering, starting at a low price and working up.
The best motorhome upgrades to consider
Dashboard cup-holders
Mirror protectors
Wi-Fi – stay connected
Inverter – AC power on the go
Lithium battery
Satellite navigation
Paint protection
Solar panels
Rear air suspension
Levelling system
Dashboard cup-holders
Proper cup-holders might seem a minor upgrade, but they can make a big difference on long drives.
They help to keep drinks secure and within easy reach, reducing the chances of spills and keeping you focused on the road. I have never understood why most motorhomes lack cup-holders!
Mirror protectors
Wing mirrors on your motorhome are all too vulnerable to accidental damage, particularly when you’re on narrow country lanes.

Mirror protectors are your first line of defence against knocks and scrapes, potentially saving you from costly replacements.
Wi-Fi – stay connected
Reliable internet in a motorhome is a must for many ‘van owners these days, whether you need to check routes, stream TV or stay in touch with family.
The Pathway 4G portable router (full disclosure, my company is involved in manufacturing and marketing this product) offers a simple plug-and-play solution without drilling or installation. Simply lick and stick it to a window or flat surface, inside or out.
You can also take it with you to use without your motorhome. Although a fixed aerial system can provide even stronger signals in remote areas, it means that if you’ve decided on selling the motorhome, you will be selling it on with it installed and will have to buy a new one.
Inverter – AC power on the go
An inverter allows you to use 230V appliances when you’re not on a hook-up. It is perfect for charging laptops, running a coffee machine or using a hairdryer. Choose a pure sine wave inverter for compatibility with sensitive electronics and smooth, efficient operation.
We have a 2000W inverter professionally fitted to power our coffee machine, so I consider this upgrade absolutely essential.
Lithium battery
A lithium battery upgrade is a game-changer for off-grid camping. Lithium offers higher efficiency, faster charging and a much longer lifespan than traditional lead-acid batteries.
This provides more reliable power for your appliances and devices, reducing the need to connect to mains electricity.
However, make sure your charger system is compatible and seek professional advice before embarking on this upgrade.
Satellite navigation
A motorhome-specific sat-nav system is a must-have. Unlike regular GPS devices, the best motorhome sat navs are designed with ‘van dimensions and weights in mind, so you can avoid low bridges and narrow roads.
Many models also feature campsite directories and real-time traffic updates, making planning your trip a breeze.

That said, my top tip is to use a paper map as well. There’s nothing quite like spending an evening planning tomorrow’s route with a map opened out on the table.
Paint protection
Your motorhome is an investment, so protecting its exterior is really crucial. A professional paint protection treatment creates a barrier against dirt, road grime and UV rays, helping to maintain that showroom shine and prevent long-term damage.
If you have the time, apply a ceramic spray coat yourself. Any protection also makes cleaning a motorhome much quicker.
Solar panels
Harness the sun’s power with a solar panel system. This eco-friendly upgrade provides continuous energy to keep your batteries charged, perfect for off-grid adventures and handy when the ’van is in storage.

Solar panels reduce reliance on 240V hook-ups, making your travels more sustainable and free. While less than essential, it is an upgrade worth considering if you are regularly parked up and not using the engine to recharge batteries.
Rear air suspension
Upgrading to rear air suspension enhances ride comfort and stability, particularly when carrying heavy loads.
It also improves handling, reduces body roll and helps to protect your motorhome from excessive wear and tear. We have an Airide system fitted, and it is a game-changer.
Levelling system
No one enjoys sleeping on a slope! A levelling system, whether that’s with the best motorhome levelling ramps or a hydraulic system, ensures your motorhome is stable and comfortable.

Being level improves sleep quality, helps appliances such as fridges work more efficiently, and ensures sinks and shower trays drain effectively – levelling a motorhome makes a real difference. Plus, you won’t lose your G&T across the table.
My final thoughts on motorhome upgrades
Investing in any of these motorhome upgrades will make your touring life smoother and more enjoyable. Whether you prioritise power, convenience or protection, these additions ensure you’re ready for the road ahead.
I’ve fitted all of the above to our motorhomes in the past, and I think these are some of the top items to consider if you’re looking to invest extra in your leisure vehicle.
Of course, there are many more products out there to tempt you. But remember your payload. Any accessory adds weight, so consider carefully before fitting. Happy accessorising!
