When you’re looking to buy a campervan, it’s worth finding out about the best campervan conversion companies in the UK. After all, a ‘van is an expensive buy, and you’ll want to ensure you’re getting the option that is right for you.

The good news for people hoping to buy one of the best campervans is that there’s plenty of choice. And, while buying direct from the manufacturer is an excellent option, it’s not the only one; a brand-new VW camper is no doubt something to aspire to, but for reasons of price and layout you might find that buying from one of the UK’s campervan conversion companies will suit you better.

When it comes to choosing the best van for a camper conversion, Volkswagens are understandably popular, but remember Ford, Fiat, Citroën and Mercedes all have their plus points, too.

In this guide, you’ll find we’ve referenced both our Owner Satisfaction Awards and the Practical Motorhome Awards for certain dealers.

The Owner Satisfaction Awards see readers of Practical Motorhome and members of the Camping and Caravanning Club vote to help us identify the campervan converters who are excelling both as a manufacturer and a dealer. As a manufacturer, this takes into account factors such as the ‘van’s layout, the fit and finish, the washroom and more. As a dealer, it considers the knowledge displayed, how the vehicle handover goes, and whether warranty work gets sorted efficiently.

The most recent set of results were the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2025, which were announced on 18th February, with a total of 3,553 votes received. Each category has an overall winner, while both Gold and Silver Awards are handed out for scores over 80% and 60% respectively.

Then, for the Practical Motorhome Awards, we use our combined decades of industry experience to pick out the leading ‘vans and highly commended runner ups across a wide range of categories.

Whether you’re looking for the best VW camper conversion companies or just want to know more about campervan converters in general, read on.

Auto Campers

Address: Roy Wood Transits, 429 Reading Road, Winnersh, Berkshire, RG41 5HU, 01189 790 202 www.auto-campers.co.uk

Auto Campers specialises mainly in Ford Transit Custom conversions, as it is a spin-off from a Ford garage. The company makes three ranges – a highly modular Day Van, a more conventional Leisure Van and a highly versatile MRV range – as low tops, high tops, and with a rising roof.

The company also makes custom built van conversion for people with disabilities, and does conversions on used vehicles too.

Autohaus

Autohaus was previously based at Minehead in Somerset but recently went into administration. However, it’s a name you could still come across when browsing the market.

The campervan converter had previously been known for making very sporty van conversions – many with a strong hint of the biker about them – based on the Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit Custom, and both the VW Transporter and Crafter. The conversion company had done well at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2025, with its Spartan GT our pick of the small campervans.

There has been plenty of recognition for Bilbo’s at the Owner Satisfaction Awards, most recently in February where two Gold Awards were won in the Best Van Converter – Manufacturer (New and Used) and the Best Van Converter – Dealer (New and Used) categories.

Numerous Gold Awards were also won at both the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023 and 2024, including being named the Best overall van converter (new and used direct sales) in 2023.

CMC Reimo

CMC, or Concept Multi-Car, was established in 1988 and produces a range of van conversions that come with German-built Reimo roofs. The converter uses Volkswagen, Ford & Renault base vehicles, and has also launched its own Hembil brand.

This includes the HemBil Drift, which we reviewed in 2019. We were particularly impressed by how it managed to offer some great innovative touches while still providing a traditional design.

The converter achieved two Gold Awards at the 2023 Owner Satisfaction Awards.

Hillside Leisure

Well known for the VW campervans that it has converted, Derby-based Hillside also converts other base vehicles and was the first to produce an all-electric camper van based on a Nissan.

There are now nine models available,  including three different layouts of its Hopton ‘van, which are available on both a VW or MAN TGE base vehicle, which made its way onto our shortlist at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2025.

IH Motorhomes

Address: Great North Road. Knottingley, West Yorkshire WF11 0BS. 01977 677118 www.ihmotorhomes.com

There are four VW-based models, six Fiat-based models and three Iveco-based models to choose from at the West Yorkshire-based converter.

Jerba

Address: Unit B, Halfland Barns, North Berwick, East Lothian, EH39 5PW, 01620 890374 www.jerbacampervans.co.uk

Founded in 2005, Jerba Campervans was among the first converters to qualify with Volkswagan’s Motorhome Qualification Scheme.

This award doesn’t just recognise the quality of the work, although successful applicants have to be NCC-approved, have European type approval for their vehicles and be registered on the Body Builder Database: inspectors look at the way the company is run too. So you have to have been trading for at least three years, be able to provide £5m in liability insurance, and offer a warranty on the conversion that is as good as the warranty on the base vehicle.

The Scottish company also makes its own rising roofs, complete with midge-resistant mesh windows. Since the start of 2018 it has been 100% employee-owned and the converter now offers both VW and Ford-based ‘vans.

Jöbl

Address: Rossmore Road East, Ellesmere Port, Wirral, CH65 3DD, 0151 350 6878 www.jobldesign.co.uk

The north-west based camper converter was established in 2013 and is NCC approved. Jöbl only uses VW Transporters as a base for conversions, as seen in the Jöbl Kampa LE, a ‘van we rated highly enough when we reviewed it to shortlist it for two categories at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2023.

Leisuredrive

Address: Unit 4, Fishbrook Industrial Estate, Stoneclough Road Kearsley Bolton BL4 8EL, 01204 574478 www.leisuredrive.co.uk

Leisuredrive is one of the UK’s oldest van conversion companies – it launched in 1969 when it was known as Carahome, before rebranding and moving to Bolton in the early 1980s. Mainly using a VW base vehicle, the converter also offers Ford and Renault-based ‘vans.

Murvi’s van conversions are perhaps above average in price, but they show exceptional attention to detail. The range includes many end washroom layouts – unusual in van conversions. There are a number of base vehicles used – the Fiat Ducato, the Ford Transit and the Mercedes Sprinter.

One such ‘van is the Murvi Pimento. Our resident expert, Gentleman Jack, took a look and thought it was a highly manoeuvrable vehicle that came with a layout that was judged to be “easy-to-live in”.

Redline conversions

The van converter found itself having two of its conversions make the shortlist at the Practical Motorhome Awards, including for the best budget campervan category, thanks to the Classic, while its GT Sport made the shortlist in our pick of the small campers.

Vantage Motorhomes

  • 2 x Gold Awards at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2025
  • 1 x Gold Award at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024

Leeds-based Vantage built its reputation for a wide range of Fiat-based high top van conversions. In 2020 it produced its first models with four travelling seats, including the Sky with a drop-down bed. In more recent times, it has released two Ford Transit-based ranges, the Vantage Luna and the Fuze.

The Luna impressed our judging panel at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2024, where it made its way onto our best small campervan shortlist – we loved its well-planned interior.

Vantage took the title of Best Van Converter – Manufacturer (New and Used) at the 2025 Owner Satisfaction Awards, as well as receiving two Gold Awards.

  • 3 x Gold Award winner at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2023

Barely a week seems to go by before Wellhouse Leisure is bringing out yet another new van conversion. The Huddersfield-based conversion company opened its doors in 2003 and now has models that come on a wide range of base vehicles, including Renault, Ford, Toyota and Nissan options.

One model that impressed our expert, Gentleman Jack, recently was Wellhouse Leisure’s conversions of the Ford Transit Custom – below, you can see the Lux XL, which was built on the long-wheelbase Custom and comes in a number of different layouts

Another model we liked was the Wellhouse Misano 4.1, a Ford Transit-based ‘van that we thought came with an excellent level of spec.

Just about any base vehicle seems to be a possibility – new or used. As a result, the brand’s success at the Owner Satisfaction Awards in recent years isn’t surprising, with the brand named Best Van Converter – Dealer (New and Used) in 2024 and both the Best Van Converter – New Manufacturer and the Best Van Converter – Used Manufacturer at the 2023 Awards.

One such example is the WildAx Meteor, an elegant two-berth option which comes on the Ford Transit. Our reviewer, Peter Baber, was impressed when he put it to the test, praising its comfortable lounge and double bed, as well as its refreshed décor. In fact, the ‘van was shortlisted for the best 2 berth campervan with shower and toilet category at the Practical Motorhome Awards 2025.

The brand has won a silver award at the Owner Satisfaction Awards 2024 and 2023.
