The Auto-Trail Mohican SE is just the ticket whatever time of the year you want to tour. It has more than enough of the home comforts, while top-notch build quality should provide longevity. In addition, the spacious interior areas ensure that two people won’t be constantly dodging out of each other’s way. The Mohican SE is very much a motorhome for those seeking the best in life.
There’s lots of space
It has a terrific washroom and kitchen
It’s a high quality ‘van with an excellent specification
Very little – any gripes we have are very minor
Auto-Trail’s reputation for building some of the best-appointed motorhomes on the market means that the 2006 version of the Mohican has a lot to live up to.
The SE model we chose for touring the Aquitaine region adds several luxuries to its equipment list, including satellite navigation (for UK only), a flat-screen TV monitor and a CD player.
Despite the Mohican being designed as a two-berth motorhome, there’s plenty of space for entertaining friends you meet along the way. Two well-padded sofas seat five adults, while the passenger seat swivels to complete the seating arrangements.
The table is stored in its own locker above the cab and is light enough to lift out easily. Its legs unfold quickly and provide a stable base for dinner or playing games. Our only gripe is that it’s so broad that you have to shuffle along or move the whole table across the floor to get out of the seat.
Large windows on either side of the lounge let in plenty of natural light, while a big roof-light adds to the airy feel. Four adjustable spotlights provide ample illumination for evening reading.
The spacious kitchen is one of the Mohican’s star turns and all appliances are easy to get at. The fridge/freezer is mounted a little way off the ground, making it convenient to reach for ingredients while working at the unit opposite, next to the three-burner hob. The hob has a spatter guard to keep stray cooking liquid off the worktop.
The sink is a good size and more than capable of coping with domestic duties. However, the tap could be mounted a little higher to make it easier to fit a kettle underneath when filling up with water.
There’s plenty of cupboard storage space in the Mohican’s kitchen, including a slide-out cupboard with internal racks. We also liked the glass-fronted cupboard with elasticated straps to hold wine bottles firmly in place, which was very handy when we were in the Bordeaux wine region.
You couldn’t ask for more space in a bathroom than that provided in the Auto-Trail. A swivelling toilet helps make the most of the space, while plenty of storage lockers keep the bathroom essentials tidy.
The finish of the washroom reflects the Mohican’s excellent build quality and there are no unfinished edges to catch unwary fingers or snag clothes.
You can arrange the Mohican’s bed as either a broad single or a decent double. A filler cushion is required for the latter, to prevent the main cushions from sliding around, but it’s easy to slot in. You’ll first need to store the table in its locker, though.
The slide-out base of the double bed is simple to work and has drop-down legs, so there’s no messing about come bedtime. You do have to be careful to fold these legs away again in the morning, though, because they tend to rattle while you’re driving.
The only problem with the Mohican’s slide-out bed base is that it restricts access to the underseat storage, accessed through narrow, low-set doors. However, the bed compensates by being well padded without being too soft, and the side of the kitchen cupboard makes a useful ‘headboard’.
There are plenty of cupboards in the Mohican’s interior, with three deep ones along either side above the windows. The large space above the cab is ideal for storing bedding and is home to the bed’s filler cushions. Underneath is the dedicated locker for the table.
There is masses of storage space in the kitchen for food and crockery, and the cutlery drawer is a good size. In the washroom, a wardrobe above a set of drawers can hold plenty of clothes and there is even more cupboard space above and below the sink.
Outside the ’van, there is a large locker on the other side of the interior wardrobe. The size and shape of the locker can be varied by means of an adjustable internal panel, so that it can be used as a ‘wet’ cupboard.
Underneath is a locker that runs the width of the ’van, while on the passenger side is another for storing water hoses, chairs and tools.
