Making using a mobile phone while driving illegal is one thing, but persuading people to abide the law is something else altogether and not even the threat of three penalty points is sufficient deterrent for some.

Recent research published by the Institute of Advanced Motorists showed that text messaging in particular was the biggest distraction to driving.

Faced with similar data in Belgium, the Responsible Young Drivers organisation is conducting a campaign to highlight the dangers of text messaging when behind the wheel.

The campaign includes a video that shows how learner drivers react to being told that being able to compose a text message while driving is now a compulsory part of the test and it makes for interesting viewing.
