If you love enjoying a sense of freedom, setting off on a motorhome holiday could be the best way of achieving it, a survey has suggested.

The research, conducted by Goboony, found that holidays linked with the great outdoors came out on top for achieving and enjoying that feeling of freedom. For 41% of respondents, this sense could be experienced by a motorhome. 14% viewed camping the same way, and 8% said the same about caravanning.

The study – of 2,100 consumers – also looked at the impact the pandemic has had on our holiday decisions. 37% said they will be booking a motorhome, while 36% want to take in the many wonders of the great outdoors. 29% are also strategically planning their getaways, as they plan to avoid popular tourist destinations during the peak times.

The results come at a time when there has been a general mood swing in our attitudes towards vacations. Many Brits have enjoyed taking staycations this year, with motorhomes providing both freedom and flexibility. There has also been more inclination towards holidays which provide more of an opportunity to link to nature.

A trip to see the sea is a particularly popular choice, with 32% considering the sound of the waves to be a ‘happy’ sound, while 31% view the salty smell as being their ‘happiness’ smell.

Jake Stone, UK country manager for Goboony, said: “The pandemic has naturally cemented nature’s role as an antidote for modern living. This includes when on holiday too.”

“The motorhome holiday is an ideal, safe alternative option for staycationers, and is carving itself a permanent position within the travel and tourism industry landscape. Naturally socially-distanced by design, they are an inventive way for Brits to travel safely.”

“Demand for motorhome holidays is not going away anytime soon, so it’s imperative the travel and tourism industry starts to take this mode of holidays more seriously by providing more facilities and sites suited to van life.”
