Motorhomes and campervans continue to grow in popularity, as a record 16,608 were registered with the DVLA over the past 12 months (1 July 2020 – end of June 2021).
This was an 8.25% rise from the previous record set in 2018/19 (covering the same period), which stood at 15,342.
The boom is, in part, attributed to the popularity of staycations, but other factors are also contributing.

For instance, newcomers to the world of motorhoming are finding out how they offer an easy way to visit and explore the wonderful British countryside. This not only makes it easier for us to engage and participate in outdoor pursuits, but also lets us take in wonderful views, which can do wonders for both our physical and mental health.
The rise in remote working has also played a part. Now, Brits can explore somewhere new, while working from the comforts of their vehicle, so long as they have WiFi.
John Lally, Director General of the National Caravan Council (NCC), commented: “COVID-19 restrictions on travel have helped, as the industry offers ‘social distance by design’ products. The industry is successfully attracting a new, younger customer while retaining existing ones.”
“It has been a challenge for firms to meet the demand, but they have risen to it and the resourcefulness, dependability and professionalism they showed is reflected in these record figures. Motorhome manufacture has become a British success story as firms have a well-deserved reputation for design and innovation which, coupled with investment in more sophisticated production processes, helped to see them through these unprecedented times – and grow.”
