I must confess to being a lover of fine food – one of the real joys of touring is, for me, discovering great restaurants and food markets where you can enjoy fresh local produce. But it isn’t always easy to hunt out where the best places are to eat, which is where a great new website and downloadable guide from the Camping and Caravanning Club should prove handy.


The Club recently launched its Eat Local campaign, which aims to encourage campers to celebrate the UK’s diverse food culture, and help you buy and eat better when out and about. Its initiative includes handy new web pages, part of The Camping and Caravanning Club’s Eat Local food campaign; next time you’re going away in your ‘van, pay it a visit and search for the region in which you are touring. You’ll be presented with a host of information about the cuisine that you’re likely to encounter, as well as details of the highlights that you shouldn’t miss. I’m about to take a trip to the south-west, so clicked on that region: local recommendations included Dorset Blue Vinney cheese and Cornish Yarg, which eatery suggestions included Wells market, Totnes market and Axbridge’s River Cottage canteen. Mouth-wateringly good information for foodies, I’m sure you’ll agree.


That’s not all: there are recipes galore for you to try, suggestions of sites to stay at to experience the best local food on offer, features on food-related subjects and much more besides. The Club has also joined forces with Calor and Outwell to produce a handy booklet (appropriately named Eat Local) that lists Top Tastes around the UK, and recommendations for where to eat when you’re out on tour. Why not print out a copy of the guide and tuck it in your glovebox? That way you’re guaranteed to experience the very best that every region has to offer each time you head out and about in your ’van.
