Calor has announced that it is to cease production of its 6kg Lite gas cylinders, because they have not proved to be as hard-wearing as the company’s traditional bottles.

Launched just over a decade ago in 2006, the Lite version was designed specifically for motorcaravanners who wanted to save weight.

However, these bottles failed quality tests more frequently than standard items, particularly in their ability to be “de-dented”, according to Calor Head of Corporate Affairs Paul Blacklock: “We concluded that it was not sustainable to keep supplying them.”

To cope with any shortfall, Calor is investing an extra £1m in its standard 6kg gas bottles.

What’s next?

Fans of these lighter cylinders might not have too long to wait for a new option.

Calor is currently undertaking research and development, with a view to launching a new product next year which, it says, will be lightweight.

If you were affected by the recall, announced back in 2014, concerning bottles produced between 2008 and 2011, and were issued with a voucher to claim a new Lite bottle, you can still hand in this voucher at any participating dealer. However, you may have to accept a standard 6kg cylinder instead.

While we are on that subject, from 1 July 2017, the 6kg Calor Lite recall will be closed. Any 6kg Calor Lite Cylinder Recall vouchers given to customers after that date will be honoured. And, again, if stock is not available, this voucher can be exchanged for a standard 6kg gas cylinder.

Despite Calor Lite cylinders being more expensive than the standard versions, the company is offering no compensation for motorcaravanners who find they need to replace their Lite cylinders with the standard items, if stocks run out.

But, if you have any Calor Lite cylinders that you no longer need, these will be refunded, in accordance with Calor’s Cylinder Refill Authority Agreement.

In addition, we understand that customers who already have a Calor Lite should be able to get refills.
