Thule is a renowned maker of roof racks and cycle carriers, so we had high expectations of the BackPac 973, and it didn’t disappoint. The assembly process is simple, although you have to make sure you get the right fitting kit – these come separately boxed. Build quality is high and the rack is easy to set up and is very secure. We particularly like the grab arm design – each arm is easily detachable from the rack, so you can attach the arms to the bikes before placing the bikes on the rack, reducing the need to mess about trying to get grab arms to thread through multiple bikes. The Thule BackPac 973 can carry up to four bikes, but you only get the equipment for two in the box, and will have to buy extra parts for bikes three and four.
