Plans are underway to transform the 182-mile Coast to Coast walk into a new National Trail.

National England has started to put together a proposal that, if successful, would make exploration of some of the country’s most iconic landscapes easier and more accessible for all.

The plan could make it more appealing for walkers to use their motorhome as a base to explore the route.

Currently, the Coast to Coast trail is looked after by a number of parties including landowners, national parks and local authorities.

If the 182-mile stretch did receive National Trust status, it would mean it would be eligible for Government funding too. This would subsequently help to maintain the trail, along with ensuring it will become more accessible.

Proposed work includes adding gates to sites where there are currently stiles, and also modifying paths as required too.

The existing route will be assessed to see what necessary improvements could be required to ensure it meets National Trail Quality Standards.

Amanda Craig, Director for People and Nature at Natural England said: “We know now more than ever just how important it is to get outdoors and active in green spaces to help boost our physical health and mental wellbeing.”

“We are delighted to be working closely with the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales, Lake District National Parks and other partners to develop a proposal for this exciting new route. It will not only improve accessibility for everyone but will also help to boost our engagement with our beautiful natural landscapes.”

“The proposals will include a map, detailed route information and will also look into what can be done to improve standards to bring it up to National Trust Quality Standards.”
