The small Northumberland village of Bamburgh has been voted the best seaside destination in Britain in the Which? annual survey.

The survey saw 4,303 holidaymakers vote for their favourite resort, rating them across a number of categories, including the quality of the beaches, the seafront, the tourist attractions, food and drink, scenery, peace and quiet, and the value for money.

Having also claimed the top spot in 2021, Bamburgh – a village with a population of just over 400 – proved unbeatable again, with a score of 87 per cent achieved. The beautiful beaches and clifftop castle proved a winning formula for the public.

Wales was also a popular holiday destination, with three seaside towns making it into the top six. Llandudno swept into second place, with a score of 86 per cent. The biggest draw in the area is the Great Orme, a limestone headland that rises to 700ft and offers views that were described as “incomparable”.

In third place came St Andrews, with the Scottish seaside destination achieving a score of 84 per cent. The historic city is home to the oldest university in Scotland, has medieval streets to explore, and also boasts a world-famous golf course.

Devon’s Dartmouth came next, with a score of 83 per cent securing fourth spot – if it’s a destination you’re thinking of heading to, our guide to the best motorhome sites in Devon is worth a look. Dartmouth shared fourth place with the Pembrokeshire town of Tenby. There are some beautiful sights in the Welsh town, including the picturesque North Beach, complete with rock pools and windbreaks, Castle Beach and Harbour Beach.

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said: “The British seaside hasn’t boomed like this since the 1960s. Holidaymakers had such a fantastic time in their caravans, tents and beach lodges over the past two years that a coastal break on home shores is on the cards for many, even with restrictions on overseas travel lifted.”
