Is this a camper-van-plus? Or just short of being a full high-top? We step aboard Wellhouse Leisure's long-wheelbase Terrier Lux-XL to find out

Overview

You could say that Wellhouse Leisure has moved on to bigger things since its Terrier won the Best Rising-Roof Camper gong at our Motorhome of the Year Awards in 2014 (not least being taken over by Lunar).

The original Terrier has spawned a handful of stablemates – long-wheelbase, Sport and the positively outrageous V-Sport variants – as well as this, the Lux-XL.

Positively two-berth, this is a high-top with a roomy floorplan that offers a relatively large amount of space.

You can thank the rear settee for that, and the fact that the kitchen wraps around the rear, with a toilet room in the offside corner.

Design

The starting point is Ford’s L2 H2 Transit Custom Kombi – the long-wheelbase (overall length 5.34m, compared to the standard 4.97m), high-roof (not that high – interior standing room is 1.73m), more car-like Custom version (the one without that ugly front).

Latest versions offer Euro 6 130PS (128bhp) or 170PS (168bhp) engines mated to six-speed manual gearboxes as standard, but with the enticing prospect of the SelectShift automatic transmission for an extra £1750.

Wellhouse Leisure is also toying with the idea of a ‘bargain’ Lux-XL, using the 105PS (104bhp) engine.

Ford’s cab is a slick affair. The padded steering wheel is an instant indicator that the aim here is to be as car-like as possible.

Equipment levels are good – air conditioning, steering wheel controls, an upmarket stereo and more are all standard – but it’s the overall fit, finish and feel that should have the likes of Fiat’s Ducato trembling.

Kitchen

Beyond that open lounge, the kitchen unit is angled at its leading edge, enhancing the feeling of space.

There are 230V and 12V sockets in the former and in the kitchen.

You get a useful amount of worktop either side of the sink, a Smev two-burner hob set across the back and a Dometic extractor above.

Under the hob is a Waeco compressor fridge – space is tight, so it’s only a 40-litre model, but it’s above a floor locker, making it easier to access.

In this example, there’s a Smev grill, a £300 option.

The locker below is tall and not very deep (the wheelarch intrudes), so it might be suitable for bottles and so on.

Sleeping

The bed size in this Wellhouse Leisure motorhome starts at 1.60m x 1.26m, but you can extend the swivelled cab seats to 2.01m – the front squabs can be set flat and level.

Washroom

Adjacent to the end kitchen, the toilet room has a Dometic swivel-bowl loo, with cassette access via the back door.

Storage is limited to an overhead locker. Access to the loo can be a bit tricky when the bed is made up.

Equipment

Overall build quality is as good as we’ve come to expect from Wellhouse.

There’s a real heavy-duty edging to the furniture, for example. The locker doors all have positive catches, which are easy to operate.

The upholstery is of automotive style and quality in black, to complement the front seats.

All curtains are elasticated blackouts, so no rattles when you’re driving. They save a lot of space, too.

There’s refinement in the dark wood gloss finish to the hard furnishings. Carpet trimwork is kept to a minimum.

Lighting is all LED (except the kitchen extractor, but these could be exchanged), with the living area having five ceiling downlighters, bullet lights over each cab seat and a strip over the sink. A couple of reading lamps will be added over the settee.

An Eberspächer unit with outlets in the passenger seat base and the lounge provides heating.

A Midi Heki overhead and twin sliding windows help with ventilation.

Options fitted here include ISRI Ska cab seats with heating (£900), a Smev grill (£300), a colour reversing camera (£300), colour-coded body mouldings (£600) and a Thule wind-out awning with LED lighting strip (£675, or £525 without the colour-coding).

Verdict

Of course there are some compromises, just as you find in any motorhome.

The truth is, the Wellhouse Terrier Lux-XL falls somewhere between a camper van and a full-on high-top. But that might just be where its appeal lies.

It’s car-like enough for everyday use, and offers sufficient facilities to allow you only to consider visits to the shower block as an absolute necessity.

But watch this space for an even bigger version, with more space (including headroom), a full washroom and more.

But, in conclusion, this is a very neat two-berth that offers just a bit more than a standard camper van – the Lunar takeover should mean increased production, too.

Just check you’re OK with the headroom, the lack of a shower and the bed set-up, or wait for the arrival of big sister.

  • It's quite dark inside – and the headroom won't be enough for some
  • Despite having a toilet, there's no shower
