Practical Motorhome reviews the Nu Venture Rio Quattro – read on for the definitive verdict

Design

The Rio Quattro has a multi-piece GRP body, and workmanship levels are high.

The Nu Venture’s facilities are mostly on the offside, although the freshwater drain valve is located on the nearside. The gas locker is quite high up off the ground (66.5cm), mounted over the rear farside wheel-arch.

The Nu Venture’s habitation door has a single plastic striker, and doesn’t feel as solid as some rivals.

On the road

The Dispatch is the Citroën-branded version of the Fiat Scudo. It has several benefits over the Fiat Ducato/Citroën Relay – first, the cockpit is much more user-friendly, with a car-like driving position, a slightly higher grade of switchgear and a more adjustable seating position, with rake- and reach-adjustable steering as standard.

The Dispatch also sits much lower to the ground, allowing the Rio Quattro to come in at 2.65m, comfortably within low-profile height levels.

Unfortunately, the Dispatch is a light-duty vehicle compared with the Relay, and consequently has inferior load-bearing capacity. The chassis cab version of the Dispatch has an MTPLM rating of 2900kg, and the Rio Quattro has a 550kg payload.

Lounging & dining

The Rio Quattro’s interior is traditional in design. Plywood abounds and the upholstery design is earth-toned and conservative. It’s far from unattractive, and the perceived quality is highly commendable.

Height is a bit of an issue for the Nu Venture. Its roof slopes towards the rear, creating internal headroom of only 1.86m at the lowest point. As a result, six-footers are very likely to bump their heads on the fittings, as well as on the door frame (it’s just 1.64m high).

The Nu Venture’s table arrangement uses sturdy circular table legs that slot into holes in the floor and stow in designated clips in the wardrobe. A couple of heavy, solid tabletops (0.69 x 0.62m) slot into these legs, creating a comfortable twin-dinette.

The lounge is well-lit, with big windows on either side, a Heki roof light, swivelling spots in all four corners and fixed ceiling lights. There’s only one power socket, which is shared between the lounge and kitchen.

Kitchen

The Rio Quattro ‘s kitchen is a useable size, but suffers from a shortage of workspace.

The designers have included a drop-down workspace extension, but this intrudes into the lounge.

Its hob has four burners, and it has a kitchen window, but no extractor fan. There’s only one power point and its fridge lacks automatic ignition.

Sleeping

Taking the overcab bed first, the Rio Quattro offers two swivelling spots located at either end of the bed, rather than both at the head. The bed measures 1.76 x 1.16m, but tall people will find headroom restrictive.

The twin dinette makes up either into two longitudinal singles or one double bed. The singles are relatively easy to make up; remove the backrests for the rear-facing dinette seats, set up the bed bases and rearrange the cushions.

The Nu Venture’s backrest boards actually double up as bed bases, and slot into place without much trouble, making a couple of 1.84 x 0.69m singles.

In the case of the double beds, you use the lounge table as a base to span the central corridor, and then fill the gap with cushions. It sounds straightforward, but the Rio Quattro has a bewildering collection of no fewer than 16 cu

Washroom

In the Rio Quattro’s washroom, the shower area can be cordoned off with a curtain, but in such a small space this is likely to be more annoying than effective.

Storage

There is no external storage, so things like chocks and hook-up cables will be difficult to store. This is compounded by the fact that you would have trouble using additional storage boxes, since the place where you’d normally mount them – the rear panel – is taken up by the habitation doors.

Internally, there is an adequate complement of overhead storage lockers, and we were pleased with the sturdy handles, the pneumatic struts and the general solidity of the locker doors.

The Rio Quattro’s wardrobe is tall, but also plays host to the clips for the table legs.

Under-seat storage is available, but it’s not plentiful. Wheelarches intrude upon the areas beneath the front-facing dinette seats, but access is good, using a simple lift-up seat base.

Verdict

As long as none of you is over six feet tall, then we heartily recommend the competitively priced Rio Quattro.
