This is a lot of bike for your money – for less than £300, it comes complete with mudguards, a luggage rack and a bag to carry the bike in when folded. Six gears should be plenty for most trips and gearshifts are crisp and quick. However, the Revolution Compact is noticeably slower than other bikes. That’s not much of an issue if you plan to use the bike for short hops, but worth bearing in mind for longer rides. The biggest drawback with the Revolution is the amount of flex in the height-adjustable handlebar stem. The degree of movement is disconcerting and can make you feel nervous when cornering. It’s also one of the least stable bikes when left to stand. While the Revolution is easy to fold, it is heavy, and you’ll notice the extra weight when carrying the bike.

Price: £280.
