Brompton doesn’t build a standard bike – each one is handmade in its factory to the owner’s requirements, with an extensive range of options to choose from, including the number of gears, handlebar shape and frame colour. For your £800, you’re getting a bike that’s a pleasure to ride: in spite of having tiny 16-inch wheels, the Brompton copes with all but the sharpest bumps well, thanks to its rear suspension, and spins up to speed easily.

Unlike some of the bikes on test, the front end of the bike was absolutely solid. However, what’s really impressive about the Brompton is the way it folds. It takes a little practice to do quickly, but the Brompton is easily the smallest bike when folded. Of course, this all comes at a price.

Price £805.
