A new bylaw will come into force next Wednesday (1 June) which will prohibit wild camping on the east shore of Loch Lomond.

From that date, it will be illegal to pitch up on the nine-mile stretch between Drymen and Rowardennan until 31 October; this includes part of the West Highland Way.

The rule has been introduced by Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority to prevent ‘anti-social behaviour’. The maximum fine for pitching in the prohibited area ‘overnight in a vehicle’ will be £500, and the bylaws will apply from 1 March–31 October in future years.

Scotland is extremely popular with those who enjoy wild camping, due to its relative lack of legislation in comparison with England and Wales. Grant Moir, Director of Conservation and Visitor Experience in the area, said: “There are still opportunities to camp in the area at the official campsites in Cashel and Milarrochy.”
