A study has found that van conversion modifications can add an average of £15,000 to its value, based on a ‘van which is up to five years old, with a pop-top roof revealed to be the most valuable feature to install.
The best campervans offer owners the freedom to explore whenever they want, providing a comfortable base for touring the country. However, making sure the ‘van is kitted out appropriately for an enjoyable adventure is an important factor, as the report highlights.
The research was carried out by Carwow based on internal data, and found a pop-top roof was the best feature to add for owners looking to increase the value of their ‘van. Resulting in up to £5,000 being added to the value of a van conversion, the useful modification provides campervanners with extra headroom and / or beds.
The study highlighted the importance of a kitchen too, as it was found having a sink, fridge and storage can add up to £3,000 to the valuation, while a rock and roll bed could lead to between £2,000 and £3,000 in added value.
The best heater for a campervan will play a crucial role in enjoyable winter touring, so it’s subsequently not surprising that diesel heating can result in an increase of up to £2,000 to the ‘van’s value.
Choosing the best van for a camper conversion will also factor in, with the VW Transporter, the Ford Transit Custom, the VW Crafter and the Mercedes Sprinter recommended as the ‘vans that are most likely to lead to a profit when it’s time to sell.
Other features that are important to buyers include a towbar for motorhome towing, a rear canopy and a recorded full service history. However, Carwow warned that the modifications to avoid include an engine or gearbox remap, as they could result in “complications with certain trade warranties”.
Chloe Hanham, conversion specialist at Carwow, said: “Converted van owners who want to benefit from a sale soon should pay attention to which modifications provide the best return on investment. For example, if you install a pop-top roof for £2.5k, you’re likely to double your investment, as they add an average of up to £5k to the resale value of the standard vehicle valuation. The same applies if you’re choosing which model to convert.”
“It’s also important to note that, while there are no official legal regulations regarding vehicle conversions into a campervan or motorhome, full conversion documentation is required for warranty and resale purposes – this includes gas and electricity certificates. Although it might be tempting to DIY the process, having the work carried out by a recognised and qualified conversion company is a proven way to improve the additional value.”
“It can also be beneficial to change the body type of the vehicle to a ‘motorhome’ with the DVLA. Especially because campervan and motorhome insurance are a lot cheaper than a van or work vehicle, making it more appealing to buyers!”
Campervanners on the hunt for a new ‘van may be interested to hear the new Volkswagen California launched recently, with the models coming with two sliding doors.
