Volkswagen has released details and prices of its eagerly-anticipated new California campervan.

The entry-level Beach model starts at £37,657 OTR, while the California Ocean costs from £47,840 OTR. Orders can be placed from 3 August, the first deliveries of the new VW campervan happening before the end of the year.

Based on the also new and recently revealed Transporter T6, the fourth generation VW campervan to carry the California name will be available with both diesel and petrol engines, with a DSG automatic and four-wheel drive both options. Output across the line up will range from 101bhp from the 2.0-litre diesel (Beach models only), to 201bhp from the 2.0-litre petrol unit (Ocean models only).

As aforementioned, there will be a two-model range, comprising the entry-level Beach and the Ocean, the latter replacing the current SE variant. The pop-up roof, which is electro-hydraulic on Ocean models, has a 1.2m x 2m double bed, meaning up to four people can sleep in the California.

As before, the entry-level Beach is the basic option. However, Ocean models have a full kitchen with a two-burner gas hob, a stainless steel sink and a 42-litre fridge, as well as dimmable LED lighting for the tailgate and the pop-up roof, and a multi-function holder for the rear compartment that’s a towel holder, a cup and an ashtray all in one.

There’s also a host of safety kit on board the latest VW California, such as a Driver Alert System, Brake Assist and an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. In addition, adaptive suspension will be available and the infotainment system has been updated.

Production will continue at VW’s Hanover factory in Germany. The California still has the distinction of being the only factory-built campervan on the market. Since the original, first generation California’s launch in 1988, 22,000 T3s have been built, as well as 39,000 T4s and 50,000 T5s. The T6 will be looking to build on these firm foundations.
