Looking to tour on a budget? Our Nightstops scheme, in association with the Motor Caravanners’ Club, is a great way to save money on campsite fees as you tour around our fair isle.

We’ve got a new addition to the scheme to announce; The Old Stables Inn, in Dumfries and Galloway, has joined to provide a great place to park up for the night.

What’s on offer?

Motorcaravanners are welcome to park up in the pub’s car park for free in return for using their food and drink facilities. If you’d prefer not to use the pub, and are a member of the Motor Caravanners Club, it costs just £10 per night for a stay here; much cheaper than a campsite.

You’ll need your own leisure battery for power, but there are plenty of other facilities provided. You get access to fresh water, rubbish bins, hard standings and an all-important dog exercise area. There are also disabled-friendly facilities during the pub’s opening hours.

The pub itself offers hearty meals, served either in the bar or in the railway-waiting-room-themed room. There’s also free WiFi, a 50″ screen, and Wii games to keep you entertained.

What’s more, it is open all year, and is located in the small village of Beattock, just off the A74 that takes you from Carlisle to Glasgow – great for anyone heading up to the Highlands.

What’s here?

The area around The Old Stables Inn has plenty to keep you occupied, too. It is just 2.5 miles from the town of Moffat, where you can stock up on supplies for your ‘van, eat out at one of the cafés and restaurants, or visit the town’s museum, which has free admission and exhibitions on local history. You can also buy a Town Trail map to help you explore the history of the town’s buildings.

This is also great walking country, with sights such as The Grey Mares Tail waterfall and St Mary’s Loch providing popular destinations. You could also join the Southern Upland Way, a coast-to-coast trail, or the Annandale Way, which starts north of Moffat and runs past the village of Beattock as it heads south.

For anyone interested in Robert Burns, Dumfries has plenty of places of interest and is just a 30-minute drive from this Nightstop.

What is a Nightstop?

Practical Motorhome’s Nightstops scheme is run in association with The Motor Caravanners’ Club (MCC) and is here to save you money and help you go further.

Our locations are sites across Britain where campervans and motorhomes can overnight for a modest fee. Some are back-to-basics sites with few facilities, while others provide a full range of services.

You’ll find them at hotels, farms, pubs and more – some will even let you stay for free if you dine at their establishment.

Happy touring all round!
