Can a classic campervan be improved? Devon Conversions thinks it has done so. As Britain’s oldest converter of Volkswagen campervans, this Durham-based company has listened to feedback and will launch its Mark 6 Moonraker at the 2014 Motorhome and Caravan Show in Birmingham this October.

Peter Gowland, the MD of Devon Conversions, says, “After 58 years, it might be thought there is nothing new to do to with VW camper design but we have listened to our customers and tried to offer all the features we have been asked for, with as much choice as possible.”

Campervan buyers can specify the Moonraker 6 either with a hi-top or with an elevating roof. You can also choose glass, tinted glass, or double-glazed windows with blinds and flyscreens in all models.

Since choice is the main theme, you can also decide between a Dometic three-way fridge or a compressor fridge. Small as it is, the Moonraker 6 comes with both an oven and a grill, and there’s now space for two Calor 4.5kg bottles to run them.

There’s also a new Smev hob and sink unit with split glass lids. There’s a special place for the standard-fit crockery. A new robust pressurised water pump is fitted in a spot where it’s unlikely to freeze in the winter.

The Moonraker 6 keeps the same basic layout, with two swivelling cab seats and a comfortable double bed with a flat mattress padded with five-inch Reflex foam. Another improvement is the extra storage space provided in the rear, thanks to modifications to Devon’s unique rear layflat seat.

Devon has just revealed the price of this new, improved campervan. The Moonraker Mark 6 starts at £37,182 (ex works), the same as the Mark 5. You can save money by asking Devon for the Moonraker Mark 6 conversion on older vans. For instance, they have just converted two 2011 vans, which brings the starting price down to less than £30,000.

Used versions can also be specified with a swivelling double passenger seat so that five people can travel, secured by three-point safety belts. This means that families can use the Moonraker 6 as a versatile family transporter on the school run midweek, as well as it functioning as a great campervan for breaks and holidays.

You can see Devon Conversions in Hall 11, Stand 90 at The Motorhome & Caravan Show at the NEC Birmingham, from 14 until 19 October.

If you’re looking at VW campervans at the NEC this autumn, take a look at the other rival van converters’ stands, too. For instance Danbury Motorcaravans from Bristol will be there in Hall 12, Stand 60, while Surrey-based Bilbo’s Campervan Conversions will be in Hall 11, Stand 140. Check out Westfalia’s vans in Hall 12 Stand 150, too, as well as Wellhouse Leisure’s display in Hall 11, Stand 50, where you’ll see the exciting new Ford Terrier Rosso campervan – check out video review of the Wellhouse Terrier Rosso to get a quick preview.
