The low-cost colour Kindles we wrote about last month are now available from Amazon.co.uk.

Although both look like touch-screen Android tablets, the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD are best thought of as colour-screen Kindles for consuming ebooks and movies bought from Amazon.

Both tablets run Android, but only Android apps bought from Amazon can be installed — the Google Play Android app store isn’t accessible.

If you’re happy with those limitations though, both models aren’t bad value. The Kindle Fire with 7” screen and 8GB capacity costs £129, the Kindle Fire HD with higher-resolution 7” screen, 16GB capacity and better all-round specification costs £159.
