Fiat, Citroën and Peugeot have issued recalls for certain X250 base vehicles, due to a faulty spare wheel carrier.
The X250 is built by the Sevel Group, which is a partnership between Fiat and PSA Peugeot-Citroën. Fiat sells it as the Ducato, which is Europe’s most popular motorhome base vehicle, while Peugeot and Citroën market it as the Boxer and Relay.
The problem involves the spare wheel winch, which fixes the spare wheel to the undercarriage of the chassis. This winch may fail and cause the wheel to fall off, potentially endangering both the motorhome and any vehicles that may be around it.
It afflicts Ducatos built between April 2006 and March 2010, Boxers built between February 2006 and October 2007 and Relays built between July 2006 and June 2008. All in all, over 20,000 vehicles are affected by the recall.
To check if your motorhome is one of them, you will need to refer to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the chassis plate, which is normally located in the engine compartment, just under the lip of the bonnet. Affected Ducatos have VINs ranging from ZFA25000001000371 to ZFA25000001789440, while affected Boxers have VINs ranging from VF3******11000648 to VF3 ****** 11506946 and affected Relays from VF7******11032532 to VF7****** 11507338. The fix is relatively simple, and involves a modification of the spare wheel carrier. If you think your motorhome is affected by the recall, get in touch with a commercial vehicle service centre for the relevant manufacturer as soon as possible, in order to schedule an appointment to have the work done.
