A new 11-mile stretch of the England Coast Path National Trail has opened today (9th February).

The path – which was opened by Natural England – stretches between Silecroft and Green Road Railway Station. As walkers progress along the route, they will get to take in some picturesque sights, including a stunning view of the Irish Sea and the opportunity to take in the Lake District mountains in the distance.

With a variety of beaches to explore, the stretch will also let people see Duddon sands, wildlife-rich saltmarsh and also head through Millom, which is known for its architectural, industrial and literature heritage.

Hodbarrow Lagoon RSPB Reserve is also in the area, with the former iron mine providing a sea wall walk, as well as being the place of residence for numerous seabirds. There will also be the opportunity to see Shaw Meadow and Sea Pastures SSSI – found in Silecroft, this is part of the Lake District National Park and is well-known for its summer orchids.

Gill Haigh, Cumbria Tourism’s Managing Director said: “The opening of this latest 11-mile stretch of the England Coast Path is wonderful news for all those who want to experience the stunning beauty of Cumbria’s coastline. Many visitors to our county miss out on all that the coastal areas have to offer by heading straight towards the popular central Lake District locations. This new path will encourage more people to get out and enjoy the wonderfully varied and beautiful landscapes around Millom and the Duddon Estuary.”
