Jack and his wife Flora are now on their tenth motorhome, a 2003 Auto-Sleeper Pollensa on a Ford Transit base. They have toured extensively at home and abroad, including a period of full-timing. Here, Jack answers your motorcaravanning queries:

Q: I’ve just seen a review on the Practical Motorhome website in which the author said that an Auto-Trail ’van was based on a SEVEL. It looks like it’s on a Fiat. Are they the same thing?

A: Yes and no! SEVEL is actually an acronym for a cooperative venture between Fiat, Citroën and Peugeot. So all Fiat Ducatos are SEVELs but not all SEVELs are Ducatos. SEVEL mass-produces vehicles that are collaborative ventures between the three manufacturers, although each participant also produces other maker-specific models at its own factories.

Currently there are two main SEVEL factories in Europe: SEVEL Sud is in Italy and it is here that all Fiat Ducato, Citroën Relay and Peugeot Boxer chassis are made; SEVEL Nord is in France. Their output consists of people carriers and car-derived motorhomes.

SEVEL’s full title in Italian is Societá Europea Veicoli Leggeri, so you can see why most people abbreviate it!
