Scotland appears to be making preparations for a boost in home tourism with plans for an ‘aires’ network for motorhomes. According to a recent BBC report ‘Highland Council has proposed creating a site which would accommodate up to 30 vehicles in North Kessock on the Black Isle, near Inverness.’
The Highland Council has been working with organisations such as the Campervan and Motorhome Professional Association (www.campa.org.uk/), VisitScotland and the Scottish government to accommodate the region’s many visitors with Highland Council appealing to landowners to consider the commercial benefits of accommodating motorhomes.
“The Council is also open to hearing from landowners who are interested in providing simple short stay facilities known on the continent as ‘Aires’. … It may be that you are a farmer with a spare field or someone with an extra-large garden, but we need to start thinking more commercially as well as trying to alleviate any issues caused by motorhomes. We welcome tourists in the Highlands, but we need to make sure we have the right infrastructure in place for them.”
The lack of facilities has been highlighted by the increase in motorhome numbers touring the Highlands brought about by the preference of staycationing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the BBC report there are already plans to develop overnight parking sites for motorhomes in Lochinver, Helmsdale, Bonar Bridge and Cromarty and that
Black Isle councillor Gordon Adam said ‘that it was hoped that an aires system could be in place for next year’s tourist season.’
