An inability to meet modern safety standards mean the classic VW Type 2 camper might have reached the end of its commercial life, but the South American-made vehicle may just have been thrown a lifeline.
According to Brazilian motoring site Jalopnik.br, VW Brazil is looking at ways to incorporate airbags into the cabin of its export market Type 2 models, although the opinion seems to be that it would require a redesigned dashboard.
Even so, the site reports that the Type 2 is actually safer than it looks thanks to a 1973 redesign that saw the front end reinforced with shock-absorbing chassis beams.
