One of the many fun aspects of motorhome ownership is that you can assemble a separate lightweight set of crockery and cutlery just for the ‘van. Melamine is the obvious choice for the plates, but somehow many of us rebel when it comes to drinking out of plastic cups and glasses. It’s a matter of taste. But do you have problems storing the stemmed glasses in your motorhome so that they won’t rattle and roll every time you bump along a potholed road?

Real wine glasses are much more satisfying to use than plastic, so it is worth finding a safe and quick method of securing them in your crockery cupboard. While we have seen some other motorhome DIY projects that can be detrimental to the ‘van, this is one that any future buyers of your motorhome will appreciate as much as you will.

All you need for this simple DIY motorhome storage improvement is a short offcut of 20mm to 25mm aluminium or plastic angle, a small oblong piece of vinyl flooring (soft, thick vinyl is ideal), some impact adhesive and three small fixing screws.

Set out the glasses, upside down in a tightly spaced row, with perhaps 5mm between each glass and with 15mm to 20mm at either end. Slide the angle in behind the stems to check that it is a suitable width. Measure the length of holder required at the height of the stems and cut the angle to length with a hacksaw.

Mark out the vinyl flooring offcut to the length of the angle and twice the width because it will be folded over.

Apply impact adhesive to the back of the vinyl and to both sides of one leg of the angle. Leave it until it is almost dry. Then fit the vinyl to the inside of the 90˚ angle and fold the rest of the vinyl until it is level with its back edge.

Press firmly into place to close the glue bond.

Stand the assembly on a couple of cups of the correct height and place the glasses in front of their positions in the holder. Use a felt pen to mark out where the retaining slots will need to be cut into the vinyl. These should be about the same width as the stems at the chosen height and deep enough to allow the glasses to be pushed right back into place.

Use a good craft knife to cut out the slots. (Warning: Use great care with craft knives; always keep hands and fingers behind the cutting edge.)

The final assembly should resemble that in the photo above. Try the assembly in place on the bench to ensure that it fits the glasses you need to store.

Drill three fixing holes in the exposed angle and use three short screws to attach it to the back of the cupboard. It should end up looking like the finished photo, above.

Now, for the most important part of the project, crack open a bottle and test the wine pouring operation. Cheers!
