If you're looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern-day living, you really should visit the spectacularly beautiful west of Scotland. Travel just a few miles north of Glasgow and you arrive at the magnificent landscape of The Trossachs National Park, and Loch Lomond. At 24 miles long and five miles wide, Lomond is the biggest loch in the UK. Visitors to the Trossachs can enjoy rambling and hill walking, cycling, sailing and, for the more adventurous, canyoning.
On the western bank of the loch lies the picture-postcard village of Luss. The heart of the village is a street flanked by pretty cottages which run all the way to the shoreline, from where you can see the Munro of Ben Lomond.
Also to the west lie the areas of Argyll and Bute, renowned for their high plateaux, haunting glens, coastal scenery and seawater lochs. Visit Inveraray, too, and see tourist attractions such as the castle and the Inveraray jail museum.
Elsewhere, on the west coast, go to Oban and catch a ferry for a bit of island hopping between Colonsay, Islay, Jura, Kintyre and Arran.
At this time of year, with its peaceful highland landscapes, villages, lochs and islands, Western Scotland is a get-away-from-it-all delight.
