The ancient city of Winchester is steeped in history and alive with attractions.
It is surprisingly motorhome friendly. Although driving in the centre is restricted, Winchester is one of the few cities in the UK to provide dedicated motorhome parking spaces at its park-and-ride facility.
So, once you've parked your 'van you can nip off and explore the city.
There's plenty to enjoy in town. There's the cathedral – a fitting monument to faith and
a remarkable feat of medieval engineering. Inside, among the vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows, are tombs belonging to such national heroes as the novelist Jane Austen. Outside there's the pretty picnic green and a statue to fallen soldiers. A walk through the grounds brings you to the world-famous and ancient Winchester College, and the quaint shops and pubs dotted along the city's cobbled streets.
The city centre oozes charm but also has a modern flavour. The high street boasts superb shops and trendy gastro-pubs, and there are organic delicatessens and interactive attractions such as the INTEC Science Centre. If history flicks your switch, immerse yourself in the legends of the Great Hall and Arthurian mythology.
Winchester is not England's biggest city, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm, history and accessibility.
