Caravan parks fall into two distinct groups: those that offer a range of physical activities, usually in a large leisure complex, and the quiet, country-orientated ones.
Woodlands Caravan Park, a few miles off the north Norfolk coast, manages to offer the best of both worlds. As you turn off the road between Holt and Cromer you immediately see the Woodlands Leisure Centre, with its large indoor pool, spa, fitness centre, sauna, steam rooms and sunbeds – everything you need for the body beautiful.
Make your way along the pretty, wooded drive and you arrive at the caravan park. It features a building comprising reception, shop, bar, lounge, and an attractive patio. Beyond it the touring area curves away, with pitches set both diagonally and around the perimeter. At the far end a superb two-acre children’s play area spreads beneath mature oaks and pines.
Water taps are plentiful and four excellent amenity blocks ensure that showers, lavatories, bins and chemical disposal points are never far away. There might be some security issues, though – the site entrance is rarely locked. One unique feature of this site, next to the leisure centre, is the massive six-rink indoor bowling green. The whole of the near edge of the green is taken up by a bar, usually packed with bowlers either waiting their turn or mulling over the game just played.
This site is ideal for everybody, but if you especially enjoy bowling, pack your woods and head to Woodlands. Of course, you don’t need to stay on site if you don’t want to, though there’s plenty to keep you here as we’ve shown. You could head into Cromer itself, just up the road; there’s the North Norfolk Railway, a steam railway only a couple of miles from the site; and there’s also the Famous Tree Company in nearby Holt, which crafts magnificent items out of oak recovered from HMS Victory.
