The Grange Caravan Club Site
Website: www.caravanclub.co.uk
Open All year
The Caravan Club has ploughed a £1m into this campsite and in doing so has created a real gem. The Grange has been transformed from a simple stop-off location, where you wouldn't expect to find much, to a proper caravan park in its own right.
Built on the site of a former colliery and iron works, the Grange has been fitted out to the highest standards and is perfectly located for a relaxing stop-off on any trip involving travel along the A1 road.
There is some traffic noise
but it's hardly obtrusive. What's more, the club has taken steps to combat this by planting an army of young trees that will help absorb the noise as they mature. As they are, they don't obscure the panoramic view of open farmland and hills.
A new purpose-built block houses the pristine washing facilities, including two individual shower and toilet cubicles, and a dedicated room for the disabled.
The attractive city of Durham is only three miles away and a riverside path runs directly from the site into the city centre. Beamish Open Air Museum is only 12 miles from the city.
The Grange makes an ideal base from which to explore this part of the North East. One great attribute, though, is its proximity to Durham's impressive heritage. The site is three miles from Durham Cathedral.
