Alderstead Heath
Website: www.caravanclub.co.uk
Despite its convenient location for visiting central London (an hour's drive on a good day), Alderstead Heath has a calm, rural feel thanks to its location among the open fields of the Surrey countryside.
Much of the site is dotted with grass 'base' pitches, for caravans stationed here most of the year, but these certainly don't detract from the appeal of the spacious touring area at the top end of the site. Most pitches are on hardcore hardstanding, so bring some rock pegs for your awning (although these can also be bought from the site shop).
Facilities are of the Caravan Club's usual high standard, and there is even a dedicated tourer washing area if your 'van is streaked with grime on arrival.
There is some background noise from the nearby M25, but there remains a wonderfully secluded feel to the site, which is bordered on one side by woods that are extremely popular with walkers.
Security is also excellent, with the site offering a perimeter fence linked to reception by an alarm.
Redhill and Caterham are just a few miles away, and a nearby pub, The Feathers, serves good food and real ales.
Penshurst Place 29 miles away is Penshurst Place. This 14th-century estate has a deer park and gardens to explore offering something to see all year round. Visit from November to February, £7.50 per adult. Tel 01892 870307. Web www.penshurstplace.com.
