Woodhouse Farm & Country Park
Owner Alison Hitchen
Open 1 March-31 October
Inspector Graham Clay
Woodhouse Farm & Country Park is surely one of the most spacious caravan sites in North Yorkshire. Opened in 1973 within the grounds of a 56-acre working farm, it has been carefully developed to ensure that, more than 20 years on, it still feels like part of the farm. Indeed, if you want to leave city life behind completely, visitors are invited to lend a hand with the farmwork. At busy times, you could find yourself helping with the lambs or shearing a sheep. It’s a fascinating and educational experience for young and old alike.
Despite the size of the site, there are just 200 pitches available. The result is a site with plenty of room to relax, and lots of space between units.
The pitches are split over three fields that are separated by mature trees. Two are reserved for tourers and tents, while the third is reserved for static holiday homes. Of the 200 pitches, 35 have hardstanding and 80 have electric hook-up. The only downside to all this space is that some of the pitches have a long walk to the facilities. Because the site is built on reclaimed farmland, the ground can be bumpy, so it is worth bringing your levelling chocks with you.
The modern toilet and shower block benefits from underfloor heating but many of the other facilities are based in converted farm buildings. If all that outdoor living is getting you down, or it’s a rainy day, there is a games room to keep you entertained. Or you could pay a visit to the on-site pub and restaurant, the Woodhouse Barn. It’s open both to locals and site visitors and offers a selection of home-cooked meals and sells a range of local Theakstons ales.
