LPG fixed tanks
I've read a couple of articles in the latest Practical Motorhome Magazine, Dec 2010, and both seem to be putting off anyone looking at fittin, or buying a van with a fixed LPG tank. The both quote advice from the NCC, National Caravan Council, that this type of fixture might be unsafe, or soon to be unlawful because they, the NCC, haven't got a standard on it.
Most people who have these fitted have had them done by recognised companies, or have the degree of expertees to fit them themselves. The fact that the current fixings aren't covered by any "standards" raised by the NCC doesn't matter a jot. The NCC are not responsible for drawing up the legislation, present or future. They will have no legal standing on any fixings already done, or on inspecting or approving any such standards.
Forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't the NCC is a trade organisation that advices on standards of manufacture of caravans and motorhomes? They might have companies signed up to their standards and these standards might be good for the industry and customer, but I am sure they are not a legal requirement for manufacturers, dealers or customers.
I have no connection with any company who fit LPG systems, but I do have one on my van. I know it was fitted to a high standard and I know I'm dealing with a potentially explosive gas. It just annoyed me that a magazine that many people look to for guidance on fixtures and fittings on their van seems to be giving a one sided view of the system of LPG tanks on motorhomes.
