Apple might be under fire for the poor quality mapping data and lack of street-level images in its new Maps app for iPhone — prompting a rare public apology from the CEO — but Google Maps has no such problem.

In fact a recent update has added imagery to Google Maps that can’t even be seen from street level, let alone by satellite.

Panoramic imagery from the Catlin Seaview Survey now provides a 360° underwater view of bodies of water around the world, offering surfers (swimmers?) the chance to take a web browser-based tour of six stunning areas of ocean.

  • Submerged ‘street’ views are available for:
  • Wilson Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia
  • Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia
  • Lady Elliot Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia
  • Molokini Crater, Maui, Hawaii, United States
  • Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, United States
  • Apo Islands, Dauin, Philippines

You can see the full selection of oceanic panoramas at the Google Maps Street View Ocean gallery.
