Everyone should possess some basic first aid knowledge, but the next best thing is to carry a simple reference guide in your pocket in case of emergency.

To that end, the Red Cross has released a free app for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry users that provides advice on 18 common first aid scenarios.

According to the charity, 81% of people believe everyone should know basic first aid, but just half feel confident they would be able to help if someone collapsed in front of them.

The Red Cross app is completely self-contained (so does not require internet access) and uses video, interactive quizzes and step-by-step instructions to explain how to deal with such medical emergencies as sever allergic reaction, broken bones and heart attacks.
